A Short Introduction to Regensburg International School

Regensburg International School was opened in 2009 to offer an English medium education to children from both the international and local communities in Regensburg and Eastern Bavaria. It supports the educational needs of globally mobile students as well as those of local students who are interested in an international education in an international environment. It is authorized by the Bavarian education authorities.

At present RIS admits students to grades 1 to 4. In the next few years, it is planned that the school will expand, adding both a Pre-School (3-5 year olds) and classes from grade 5 to grade 12. Since October, the school has been accepted as a candidate school for the Primary Years Programme (PYP) of the International Baccalaureate (IB), beginning the trial implementation phase which is required as part of the application process for authorization to offer the PYP and to become an IB World School.

The school is committed to offering a high quality, challenging, international education. Its aim is to develop in each student the ability to think critically and creatively, and to become reflective and life-long learners who are socially responsible, concerned for the environment, and ready to face the complex challenges of the modern world.

Teachers and Students

Both the students and the teachers at RIS come from a variety of national, language and cultural backgrounds. The teachers all  have a university education and a teaching qualification. In order to support the students, they use a wide range of teaching techniques and strategies, including whole class and small group instruction, pair work, independent learning, group discussions, co-operative learning, research projects, experiments, 'hands-on' learning, games,  role-play,  student presentations. All children are encouraged to read widely at home as well as at school.

Languages at RIS

English is the main language of instruction. To start at the school, English is not a requirement.
Students learn English through the use of English in their regular lessons. Each teacher supports language learning by providing a language rich environment, by integrating English language development with content instruction and by involving the students actively in meaningful learning tasks. On the whole, most children learn conversational language quite quickly, but it takes some years to become fully competent in both oral and written language when learning a second language for academic purposes.

German is taught daily to all students, both as a first language (Mother Tongue) and as a second language.

Other Languages: As the school grows, a third language will be offered from Grade 6.

Location

At present, RIS has a suite of rooms in the Großberg primary school of the community of Pentling. As well as spacious classrooms, the school has the use of the gym, the music room, and the outside playground and sports field. The location is child-friendly and close to nature.

By car, the school is about 12 minutes away from the cathedral of Regensburg. There is a direct connection to the highway (A93) and the federal highway (B16).
