Bavaria's Arbeits- und Familienstaatssekretär visits RIS

On Monday 14 June, Regensburg International School received a visit from Markus Sackmann, Bavaria’s Arbeits- und Familienstaatssekretär (state secretary for employment and families).  During his visit, the Staatssekretär expressed his commitment to supporting the further development of the school.  He was impressed by the international atmosphere, the diverse student body and the positive development of the young school, which is unique in Eastern Bavaria.  While visiting the classrooms, Mr. Sackmann, himself a father, was very interested in finding out about how we teach and learn at RIS.  He was also given an overview of the teaching and learning methods at RIS.  Afterwards, in conversation with some of the parents, he said he clearly understood the importance of being able to offer a high quality education for families who are interested in an international education as well as for globally mobile families.

30. November 2009:
US-Consulate General visited RIS

On Monday 30 of November RIS received a visit from Conrad Tribble, the US Consulate General in Munich.  Mr Tribble thought it an excellent idea to have such a school in Regensburg.  He was also very pleased that the school had such a good start.  We are pleased that Mr Tribble had such a good impression after talking to the students, and thank him for his kind words of encouragement, and words of praise for the staff at RIS.

It is very important to the United States government that the children of US citizens living abroad are able to have a first class education in English.  This definitely helps to develop American-Bavarian economic relations.

17 July 2009:
Storyteller Olivier enthuses children and parents

By invitation of Regensburg International School storyteller Olivier came to the Bürgerfest in Regensburg. He put up his pavilion at Jahninsel, directly next to the booth of RIS.
The numerous children who listened to his "Journey around the world in fairy tales" were enthusiastic (as were their parents!). Olivier told international stories about "A little American Indian Boy and a Big Bear" from America, about a "Gross Fat Pancake" from Russia, about "The Sultan with Dog Ears" from the Orient and many more. No wonder that there were visitors at pavilion and booth all the time.
Thousand and one thanks to you, Olivier, for having come by and introduced us to the international variety of our globe in this memorable fairy-tale manner!

26 May 2009: Fiona Kalinowski appointed Head of School

When Regensburg International School (RIS) opens on 24 August in Grossberg/Pentling, the children of RIS will be welcomed by their new head of school, Ms Fiona Kalinowski. She was selected from over 50 candidates from around the world who applied to lead the newest International School in Germany.

Ms Kalinowski has served as a teacher, consultant, languages coordinator and director at leading International Schools in Europe, Africa and America. She has enjoyed success in both small and large schools at all grade levels, including many years of service at accredited International Schools in Vienna and Amsterdam.

In recommending Ms Kalinowski as director of RIS, the chairman of the board of the Council of International Schools (600 member schools), Kevin Bartlett, said that she would be “a perfect match” for RIS.

As the associate regional manager for the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IBPYP), Ms Kalinowski led workshops, trained teachers and evaluated International School programmes in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. She enjoys a deep knowledge of educational systems around the world and understands the various approaches to schooling in German speaking European countries. Ms Kalinowski is multi-lingual (including German).

Ms Kalinowski has given seminars on all continents. She is the author of two books in the Penguin Young Readers Series and was one of the authors of a handbook for teachers and administrators in International Schools for second language learning.

 20 March 2009:
Government approves International School

With notice dated 18 March 2009, the regional authority of the Oberpfalz has granted the "Regensburger International School GmbH (RIS)“, as the organizer of the school, provisional government approval for the establishment and running of a private grade school (primary school level) starting in the 2009/2010 school year (from 1 August 2009). The school will have the title "Regensburg International School Pentling/Großberg, private Volksschule (Grundschule) der RIS GmbH" and will be located in the Großberg district of the municipality of Pentling, which is in the Landkreis (county) of Regensburg. The school has the status of a German “Ersatzschule” (or “substitute school”), which corresponds to a grade school (primary school level). The school therefore meets the requirements for the provision of compulsory education.
